About Feline Allergens

In recent years hypoallergenic cats have repeatedly made headline news. What is “hypoallergenic” where cats are concerned, and what are "reasonable expectations" for allergy sufferers at this time?

Research has shown that all cats produce some Fel-d1 Allergen.  A few cats naturally produce considerably less allergen than others. Breeds that have been thought to trigger fewer allergies include the Devon Rex, Sphynx, and Siberian.  Testing has shown only the Siberian consistenly produces lower levels of Fel-d1.

About 50% of Siberians have lower Fel d1 levels than normal cats.  Siberian Research has studied saliva and fur samples from many Siberians, and found a strong correlation between the allergen levels in cat saliva and allergic reactions in people. We have proven this trait is genetic and passed on to some of the offspring in the litter. Robert Grahn at UC Davis is studying the allergen levels in Siberians, and helping develop new testing methods.

Siberian Research strongly encourages member catteries test the allergen levels of their breeding Siberians.  We feel this unique quality in the breed should be preserved.
